Greg "The Hammer" Valentine title history
This is a career bio & title history for Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, the son of the legendary Johnny Valentine. On 11/15/76, Greg defeated Tim Woods aka Mr. Wrestling for the Mid-Atlantic TV title.
He lost the belt to Rufus R. Jones in December of 1976, but won it back in January. In March of 1977, in Asheville, NC, Rufus won the belt back from Valentine. In the meantime, on Christmas night,
1976, Ric Flair & Greg Valentine won the NWA World tag team belts from Ole & Gene Anderson, in Greensboro, NC. Ole was injured in the match & stretchered out. The titles were declared vacant & the
Anderson's defeated Flair & Valentine in a steel cage for the vacant belts on 5/8/77 with Wahoo McDaniel as the special referee. Valentine & Flair, however, beat the team of Dino Bravo & Tiger Conway,
Jr. for the Mid-Atlantic tag team belts not long after. They lost those belts to Rick Steamboat & Paul Jones on 8/22/77 in Greensboro, NC, but Greg had won the Mid-Atlantic singles title from Wahoo
McDaniel on 6/8/77 when he broke Wahoo's leg at the Raleigh, NC TV studios. In November of 1977, Flair & Valentine won the NWA tag belts back from the Anderson's. The year of 1978 started out with
Wahoo McDaniel winning the Mid-Atlantic belt back from Greg Valentine on 2/5/78 in Greensboro, NC. In April of 1978, the NWA stripped Flair & Valentine of their World tag team belts for their continued
"unprofessional conduct". Greg was not deterred, as he teamed with Baron Von Raschke to win the belts from Paul Jones & Rick Steamboat in July of 1978. They held the belts until December, when Jimmy
Snuka & Paul Orndorff defeated them. On 4/29/80, in Charlotte, NC, Valentine teamed with Ray Stevens to win the NWA tag team belts for the final time. Four days after Ray Stevens & Greg Valentine's
title victory, promoter David Crockett appeared on TV with a 16 millimeter film reel, saying that he was going to send it to NWA president Bob Geigle (the wrong man had been pinned in the match with
Steamboat & Youngblood). Stevens & Valentine attacked Crockett and Stevens destroyed the film with a pocket knife. This led to a match on 5/10/80 against Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood, with David
Crockett as the special referee. Needless to say, Valentine & Stevens lost the belts. Greg won the Mid-Atlantic TV title in 1981, then went to the WWF, where he challenged Bob Backlund for the WWWF
title. The WWF World Heavyweight Title was held up on October 19, 1981 when Greg Valentine was mistakenly given the belt by a dazed referee after being pinned by Backlund. On 11/23/81, in Madison
Square Garden, Backlund defeated Valentine in a rematch. Greg traveled back to the Mid-Atlantic territory & on 11/4/82, he defeated Wahoo McDaniel for the US title. He entered into a feud with Roddy
Piper, who at this time was a fan favorite. He injured Pipers ear & this led to a famous Dog Collar match on 4/16/83 in Greensboro, NC where Roddy won the belt. Valentine won the belt back on 5/1/83
& lost it in December to Dick Slater. Valentine went back to the WWF & on 9/24/85, won the Intercontinental title from Tito Santana in Boston. He held the title for almost a year, but lost it back to
Santana in Baltimore on 7/6/85 in a steel cage. On 8/24/85, Greg tasted his last WWF gold when he won the tag team belts with Brutus Beefcake from Barry Windham & Mike Rotondo in Philadelphia. They
lost the belts on 4/7/86 to the British Bulldogs. Valentine continues to wrestle to this day. He was slated to compete in the NWA Worlds title tournament in Tampa last month (9/00), but had transportation
problems. He is scheduled to face Joe Malenko in Tampa on the 19th of this month (10/00).
