Edge & Christian can not only compete with the best of 'em on the tag circuit, these 2 young guns also have what it takes to be successful
in the singles ranks. In 1999, Edge, who is a native of Canada, won the Intercontinental Championship in stunning fashion as he garnered the
belt in his hometown of Toronto in a hard-fought battle at a sold-out SkyDome on July 24 over Jeff Jarrett.
The long-haired, sunglasses-wearing wrestler, whose real name is Adam Copeland, was discovered by WWF executive Carl DeMarco wrestling on
the Canadian coast. DeMarco liked the way the youngster wrestled--using his quickness along with various acrobatic maneuvers that his opponents
couldn't match.
He invited the young Copeland for a trial match against a veteran mat-man, Bob Holly, and the inexperienced grappler held his own against the
experienced WWFer. By putting on a good performance against Holly, Copeland was signed to a deal by DeMarco. He immediately hooked up with The
Undertaker and went over to the dark side as part of the Ministry of Darkness.
Most of his career he has been a mysterious grappler, living life according to his new WWF ring name---on the edge. The popular wrestler likes
to finish off his foes with his Downward Spiral maneuver.
Christain, Copelands partner in crime, also found success on the singles circuit before he teamed up with edge to form one of today's best tag
teams.
On October 18, 1998, the up-and-coming grappler won his first WWF gold in Chicago, Illinois, when he grabbed hold of the light heavyweight title
over Taka Michinoku. This was quite a feat for Christian, real name Christian Cage, who had only made his pro wrestling debut 3 years earlier. He
also won the ECWA Heavyweight title in his career, but that win came before his more impressive WWF victory.
Cage, also a native of Canada, had trained under Ron Hutchinson at Sully's Gym in Toronto before hitting the pro circuits. During the summer of
1997, he worked alongside his future WWF tag partner, Copeland, as they took on Don Callis and Rick Martel at independant shows.
Christian, like Edge, mainly got his push through his dark side associations. He was also part of the Ministry of Darkness with Edge. The Undertaker,
and Gangrel. Gangrel then broke away from the Ministry and took the 2 of them with him into qan even darker side of the wrestling world, forming
a hell-raising trio called The Brood.
But once the 2 teamed up against the other duos in the federation, there was no keeping them down. Edge & Christian brought a certain flare to the
arena. They combined good looks with great technique to go along with their amazing aerial acrobatics. They would not only keep the crowd cheering,
they would, more important, keep them on the edge of their seat, awaiting their next daring move.
The duo came into their own in 1999, when they combined with the Hardy Boyz on one of the most memorable tag matches ever! On October 17, 1999, the 4
very talented wrestlers squared off in a ladder match on a Pay-Per-View event entitled No Mercy than lived up to its billing.
Even though they lost the contest, they had proved not only to everyone watching, but more important the WWF officials, that they were ready to wear
some tag gold around their waists. On April 2, 2000, at WrestleMania, the young hopefuls got their wish. But sometimes you should watch what you wish
for because they not only had to face The Hardy Boyz on this night, but also the sadistic Dudley Boyz, who were the reigning champs, in a 3-way ladder
match.
When all was said and done in the free-for-all brawl, Edge & Christian would walk away with their first WWF tag championship. They would lose the title
in a little less than a month to Too Cool, but would take it back in a rematch 3 weeks later on June 25 and reclaim their hold on the belts.
At Summerslam, the 3 teams that had squared off at WrestleMania 2000 met again in a ladder match and the action was nonstop table-breaking, ladder-fighting,
body-pounding excitement. Both The Dudleyz and The Hardyz tried to get hold of the belts from atop the ladder, but Edge and Christian would again walk away
victorious with the title straps still theirs.
Edge and Christian no longer wrestle on the dark side these days having changed their image to one that is more "fan friendly," posing for photo ops whenever
possible. This tandem has brought excitement back to the tag scene and there's no telling what lies ahead for this fabulous twosome.
